Cleaning with Chemicals - WARNING: Did you know....in the past 40 years, more than 70,000 new dangerous chemicals have been
release into the environment through consumer and industrial
products? (RPS Environmental Solutions)
With so many dangerous chemicals in our cleaning products we are literally cleaning with chemicals like, Dioxane, Trichloroethane, Nitrobenzene, to just name a few (see below for more).....there has never been a greater need for natural cleaning supplies.
First, let's take a look
at what else has dramatically increased over the last 40 years.
In an article “Most Cleaning Products Are Chemical Cocktails” By Patty Donovan she states, “Childhood asthma has jumped nearly 400%” (CBC) and is the #1 cause of absenteeism in schools.
In fact, asthma now ranks among the most common chronic conditions in the U.S., affecting an estimated 14.9 million people.
Then there are allergies that affect more than 50 million Americans alone.
Allergies are the six leading cause of chronic disease in the U.S., costing the health care system $18 billion annually.
Cancer is now the leading cause of death in children between the ages of five and nine.
Brain cancer in children has increased 40% in the last 20 years.
Thirty years ago the 3 major childhood illnesses were chickenpox, measles and mumps, now it is asthma, ADD and cancer.
So, let’s take a look at ADD/ADHD, it is the most commonly diagnosed childhood behavior disorder today.
More than two million (3-5%) children have ADD/ADHD.
Also, male and female infertility are on the rise, research is now pointing to pesticides as a viable cause.
Add to this, a rise in depression, joint pain, chronic fatigue, sleep disorders and on and on it goes.
Let me repeat my first sentence, in the past 40 years, at least 70,000 new chemicals have been released into the environment through new consumer and industrial products as we're cleaning with chemicals.
Coincidence? I don’t think so!
scratch the surface and look at the ingredients in the most common toxic cleaning products, the touch me nots! Then below, you can click on links to make your own natural cleaning supplies.
Alkylphenol Ethoxylates - A hormone disruptor causing imbalance, increases estrogen.
Butyl Cellosolve - A neurotoxin damages brain and nervous system.
Diethanolamine - A sudsing agent causes carcinogens, shallow breathing, vomiting and death.
Formaldehyde - Highly toxic, carcinogen
Hydrochloric Acid - Corrosive, eye and skin irritant
Hydrochloric Bleach - Eye, skin and repiratory tract irritant
Nitrobenzene - Causes skin discoloration, shallow breathing, vomiting and death
Perchlorethylene - Damages liver, kidney, nervous system
Petroleum Distillates - Flammable, carcinogen
Propylene Glycol Immunogen - Main ingredient in antifreeze
Sodium Hypochlorite - Dangerous chemical, can be fatal
Sodium Laurel Sulfate - Carcinogen, toxin, genetic mutagen
Sodium Tripolyphosphate - (STPP) Irritant
Trichloroethane - Damages liver and kidneys
I’m sure this is getting boring and discouraging but it’s important we know and understand the ramifications of cleaning with chemicals, all the toxic cleaning products we’re bringing into our homes and the dangerous affect it has on us and those we love.
There are more considerations such as what these chemicals do to our environment. I've mentioned this on a couple other pages but it's worth repeating.....
There are many chemicals that pose a threat to our water quality, fish and wildlife. The U.S. Geological Surveys reports detergent metabolites and disinfectants threatens the life and quality of fish in streams nationwide along with various other household chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, etc.
One of the biggest culprits in ocean pollution is phosphates, common in laundry detergents and some cleaning products. The average consumer nationwide uses about 30 pounds of laundry detergent a year. All of this is wreaking havoc and harm to our ecosystem balance.
Again as I stated in my intro, I want to make it easy for us to substitute dangerous items for healthy ones and keeping it pure and simple.
After we get through what we should eliminate in our homes, we’ll look at home remedies that are easy to make, easy on the budget and most importantly, healthy to our bodies.
