DIY air freshener is simple and best of all you can enjoy chemical free air freshener with the recipes and tips below!
There are so many different homemade air fresheners but first let me remind you, when the weather is nice, it’s healthy to open your windows and let the fresh air blow through your home.
And yes, I’ve done a little more research
I'll show you how to:
- Eliminate Odors
(like maybe fried fish!)
The following works great as natural air fresheners.
Mix 1/4 C baking soda with water in a spray bottle. Shake well and spray.
The baking soda absorbs the odor.
OR Spray undiluted white vinegar in the air, the vinegar smell evaporates very quickly taking the odors with it.
OR Place a bowl of vinegar on the counter and let it sit for a few hours.
Another Option - you can pour
baking soda into something that has large holes on top (think of a
Parmesan cheese shaker or get a hammer and nails and make your own holes
on a jar lid) and sprinkle on your carpets or any areas that need some
You can also add some essential oil if you want to add a nice smell - you'll just need to give it a shake to release the aroma.
Basic Homemade Air Freshener Spray
With your favorite Essential Oil
In a small, clean spray bottle, add 1 cup of water (preferably distilled),
1 oz of inexpensive vodka and 10 drops of your favorite essential oil.
You can adjust the amount of scent to your preference and/or combine a couple.
Shake well and spray.
It's safe, effective and clean!! In case you're tempted to drink the vodka instead, it does serve a purpose; it will help emulsify the oil and water together and will help with rapid evaporation.
Rubbing alcohol will not do the job.

Fresh Lemon Air Freshener Spray
Heat 2 C water, once water is hot (doesn't have to boil) add 1/2 C of baking soda and stir well until dissolved. Add 1/4 C of lemon juice, stir and allow to cool. Pour into a misting spray bottle and enjoy the fresh scent of lemon - the baking soda will also help remove odors from the room.
Solid Homemade Air Fresheners
In a small decorative cardboard box
Put some baking soda in the box and add 10 drops of your favorite essential oil.
You'll need to occasionally add more oil to refresh the aroma.
Keep in bathroom, kitchen, wherever you want subtle air fresheners.
You may want your home to smell like you've been baking homemade pies.....try this calorie free recipe!
Add sliced apple to approximately a cup of water with a couple cinnamon sticks and let simmer.
If you prefer, you can just do spices like allspice, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla in a cup of water. (It helps to add a little oil (1tsp) to bind the scents)
Maybe you want more of a citrus scent. Slice some fresh citrus of your choice instead.
You can do this in a pan or skillet, (there are potpourri burners you can purchase as well) just make sure you don't let it boil dry - that may not smell so great!!
Once you've filled the air turn off the burner and allow to cool. You can use a strainer and pour the mixture into a spray bottle for future use.
Another remedy -
You can also purchase diffusers for essential oils - there's a wide range in options and price. Some options are:
Advantages: very simple to use; provides light background fragrance.
Disadvantages: does not produce strong concentration for therapeutic benefits.
Electric heat diffusers
Small absorbent pads are placed inside of a heating chamber with ventilation that allows the aromatic compounds to evaporate into the surrounding air.
Advantages: easy to use; minimal maintenance; can diffuse thicker oils.
Disadvantages: heat damages some aromatic compounds.
Cool air nebulizing diffusers
A system that uses air pressure generated by a compressing unit to vaporize the essential oils.
A glass nebulizing bulb serves as a condenser, allowing only
the finest particles of the essential oil to escape into the air.
Advantages: strong diffusion maximizes therapeutic benefits in respiratory conditions.
Disadvantages: diffusers need to be cleaned regularly, and tend to clog. More viscous oils cannot be diffused (such as sandalwood or ylang ylang).
Electric heat and cool air nebulizers can be purchased with timers, to produce intermittent diffusion.
This reduces the amount of oil consumed, and prevents over-saturation in a room.
